In Africa today, the use of the sun as a source of energy for lighting and heating remains low. Yet, there is no other place on earth with so much sunshine through the year, and quite uniformly spread.
Why won’t Africa warm up to the free, abundant and inexhaustible resource? Is it because our addiction to fossil fuels is so ingrained that we cannot fathom a new way of looking at energy? Or could it be that, while the sun may be free, the means of harnessing it remain prohibitive? Most importantly, are our policymakers committed to solar?
This blog sets out to explore these questions and to investigate ways in which solar power can be promoted and popularized in Africa in general, and in Kenya in particular.
